The Campaign for Action is a collaborative effort to implement solutions to the challenges facing the nursing profession, and to build upon nurse-based approaches to improving quality and transforming the way Americans receive health care.

The unprecedented initiative was launched in November, 2010, at the National Summit on Advancing Health through Nursing where more than 600 top health leaders from around the country came together in Washington, DC.

The purpose of the Campaign is to guide implementation of the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine’s landmark report Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, a report already believed to be as profound and lasting as medical education’s Flexner report.

Campaign participants—including health leaders from government, business, public health, academia and other sectors—will meet to how to move forward with report recommendations pertaining to nursing education, interprofessional collaboration, scope of practice and leadership. Discussions will focus on:

  • Preparing and enabling nurses to lead change;
  • Improving nursing education;
  • Removing barriers to practice;
  • Creating an infrastructure for interprofessional health care workforce data collection; and
  • Fostering interprofessional collaboration.

“The Foundation is committed to using the IOM Future of Nursing report as it is intended to be used, as a roadmap for future direction and action,” said Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, President and CEO of RWJF. “We are doing this by convening leaders from all sectors, both public and private to join us as partners in this national movement to make these recommendations a reality.”

June 13 Forum Examines Rural Health, Nursing Solutions and Policy Implications

On Monday, June 13, 2011 from 9:00-11:30 a.m. ET, AARP, in collaboration with the National Rural Health Association and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will host an AARP Solutions Forum on Advancing Health in Rural America: Maximizing Nursing's Impact.

The forum will convene policy experts, thought leaders and key stakeholders to examine how to improve health care in rural America, where a shortage of providers limits access to primary and preventive services, reduces consumer choice and can raise costs. Panelists will discuss problems facing rural health care; highlight cutting-edge rural health models that are making a difference; explore state and national nursing-based solutions; and discuss policy implications for state and federal policymakers. Additionally, experts will consider important opportunities to improve rural health found in the recommendations of the recent Institute of Medicine report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.
