Annual Convention & Trade Show
September 21 - 23, 2011
Holiday Inn Grand • Billings, MT

Dear Friends:
Taking charge of change. Never have we experienced the magnitude of changes in health care as those that are now sweeping across the state and nation. Changes in technology, workforce, delivery systems, quality, financing, regulation and competition create unique challenges for everyone. As stewards of our health care system, we must all endeavor to manage these changes and continue providing exceptional care to our communities.
In addition to these changes in our health care environment, there are significant trends emerging around us that challenge our ability to “take charge of change.”
Advances in health care have helped people live longer, healthier lives, extending the life expectancy of Americans to nearly 80 years. This trend, along with other factors, has created increased health care spending. Understanding and managing the drivers of these expenses is critical to shaping health care policy that slows cost growth while maintaining quality.
Delivery system changes have also impacted hospital-physician relationships. Over the past two years the number of hospital-based physicians has grown in Montana; recent surveys indicate that nearly half of the state’s physicians are now employed by hospitals. This number is expected to continue its upward trend.
Finally, Montana’s hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies and hospices provide vital health care services to thousands of residents in our communities—but there are changes to how that care is delivered. For example, hospitals are providing greater numbers of services on an outpatient basis (350,000 ER visits, 3.6 million outpatient visits, and 48,275 outpatient surgeries in 2010). Montana’s nursing homes provided over one million days of care last year, but this number has declined considerably in recent years in favor of alternative care and healthier, longer lives.
These are just a few of the trends impacting health care that, when added to the mix of other issues surrounding us, reinforce the need to be innovative in our approaches to “taking charge of change.”
I invite you to attend the 2011 MHA Convention and join us as we start taking charge of change in health care in Montana. Enjoy your time in Billings.

Featured Speakers
Just a few of the outstanding speakers you won’t want to miss!
V.J. Smith has been a professional speaker for more than a decade. He travels throughout the United States and Canada.
Smith has also been a bill collector, solar collector salesman and a fundraiser. “Being a child of the early ‘70s, it took me a little while to figure out what I wanted to do with my life,” he says.
As for his speaking ability, he credits that with growing up with three brothers and four sisters. “You had to learn to talk loud and fast or you didn’t get much to eat,” Smith muses. Drawing on his lifetime experiences, Smith peppers his talks with anecdotes and personal stories to illustrate key points. He feels he is better equipped to be a storyteller, not a preacher.
Smith honed his speaking skills through his membership in Toastmaster’s International. On two occasions he was a finalist in that organization’s ‘World’s Championship of Public Speaking.’
A 1978 graduate of South Dakota State University, Smith spent the decade of the 1980s working for the Allied Signal Aerospace Company in Kansas City, MO. He returned to his alma mater in 1990 to serve as Assistant Athletic Director for the SDSU athletic program. He was appointed Executive Director of the SDSU Alumni Association in 1996 and resigned from that position in January 2007.
Smith is the author of the book, The Richest Man in Town and Jackrabbit Tales. |
Anna Pou, MD, a native of New Orleans, received her medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine. She subsequently completed 2 years of General Surgery training at the University of Tennessee, a residency in Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a Fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery and Microvascular Reconstruction at Methodist Hospital of Indiana under the direction of Dr. Ron Hamaker. Dr. Pou served on the faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston for 7 years where she was the Director, Division of Head and Neck Surgery from 1999 to 2004 and the Co-Director of the Fellowship in Advanced Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery from 1998 to 1999. She returned home to join the faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans in September, 2004 where she is currently Professor and Program Director of the residency program.
Dr. Pou was on call at a local community hospital when Hurricane Katrina made landfall, August 2005. She experienced firsthand the medical and ethical challenges faced by healthcare providers caring for patients following this disaster. Since that time she has worked to educate the medical community regarding disaster preparedness. Dr. Pou has also co-authored disaster medicine legislation in the state of Louisiana which was signed into law in August 2008 that provides legal protection to healthcare providers rendering care during disasters when resources are overwhelmed. |
William R. Lutz is President of Optimum Solutions & Strategies, LLC. The mission of Optimum Solutions is to jumpstart a culture change in residential healthcare communities through grass-roots changes in foodservice. A simple touch, such as coursed plate presentation, enhances the dining experience of every resident. Quality of life is greatly increased merely by offering a tableside menu choice. Bill and his team provide consultation and expertise on implementing a compliant foodservice system that borrows ideas and methods from the restaurant industry. The result is savings in labor and food cost, vastly improved food preparation, and more satisfied customers.
Before founding Optimum Solutions in 1997, Bill owned and operated several fine-dining restaurants in Columbus, Ohio. Grand Vu Visionary Cuisine, in Grandview Heights, won critical acclaim from the local media, consistently being named “Four-Star,” and among the “Top Ten” in central Ohio. Bill has been involved in the restaurant industry since 1979. In July 2005, Maurice’s Bistro, a restaurant developed and installed inside the Marian Estates Retirement Community in Sublimity, Oregon, was given the highest honor of “Four Forks” by the food critic from the Statesman Journal.
Bill educates residential health care practitioners by presenting various seminars, cooking demonstrations and workshops across the country. |
Lois McElravy grew up believing she could accomplish anything she set her mind on doing. She never knew her mind would turn into her greatest challenge. When a utility truck violently crashed into Lois’ car in 1990, the resulting brain injury may have destroyed Lois’ life plans, but not her spirit. Learning to laugh and hangin’on with humor rescued her from the distress and despair surrounding her daily life and initiated her recovery. Twelve years post-injury, Lois’ brain function improved. In 2005, she founded her motivational speaker business, Lessons from Lois. Averaging 20 events a year, Lois motivates, inspires and entertains international audiences with her playful sense of humor and personal stories that impart a heartfelt message of perseverance and hope. Drawing on her personal journey of brain injury, Lois paves the way for others to bounce back when life looks ugly and equips them with strategies to feel happy in the midst of trying times.
Lois lives in Missoula, Montana with her husband Larry. She is a member of the Brain Injury Association of America, she served on the Board of Directors for the Brain Injury Association of Montana for seven years and the Missoula Businesswomen’s Network Synergy Board for 6 years. Lois was MBN’s 2008 Businesswoman of the Year. She currently serves on the Governor’s Vocational Rehabilitation Advisory Council and the Montana Brain Injury Council. |
