Annual Convention & Trade Show

September 23 - 25, 2009
Holiday Inn Grand • Billings, MT

Dear Friends:

One Voice. Not since the introduction of the Medicare and Medicaid programs in 1965 has it been as important for the health care community to come together with one voice in an effort to achieve true health care reform in our country.

If history has taught us anything, it is that change takes time and patience, so it is essential that we support health care reform and work out our differences over time. In 1945, President Harry Truman sent a message to Congress asking for legislation establishing a national health insurance plan. Two decades of debate ensued; then, in 1965, Medicare and its companion program Medicaid were signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson as part of his "Great Society." Ex-president Truman was seated beside LBJ at the signing and he was the first to enroll in Medicare.

We are at another historic time in our journey. President Obama and Senator Baucus are challenging Congress to once again address health care reform to assure coverage and access to affordable, quality health care for all. Every voice counts in this debate, which will impact all of us and the generations that follow. But…we, too, will need to be patient as the details of health care reform take many shapes in the years ahead.

Although not quite as historic, MHA is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year. The association has been making a difference in Montana’s health care since 1934, the year of the great dust bowl and, ironically, the turning point of the great depression. In health news, the first x-ray photo of the entire body was performed and Vitamin K was introduced. Unemployment decreased to 22% and the president set up public works around the US, including bridges, roads and flood control dams in an attempt to put America back on its feet. Déjà vu all over again.

Seventy-five years ago our predecessors rose with one voice to make their mark on health care across this state and country. Their early efforts benefited all of us and truly set the foundation for MHA’s vision to be the best state health care association in the nation. The strength of MHA continues to be you, our members; your support will enhance our efforts to be the best for another 75 years!

I invite you to attend the 2009 MHA Convention to celebrate One Voice and the MHA 75th Anniversary. Enjoy your time in Billings.

Dick Brown
President/CEO
